Transparent Assignment Design: How to Write Assignments that Help Students Understand What You Expect – (September 3, 2025 02:00 PM – 02:50 PM)

    Location:
    TLPDC Room 153
    2802 18th Street
    Lubbock, TX 79409

    Room: TLPDC 153

    Available Seats: 32

Perhaps the smallest and most important change teachers can make is to offer students an honest look at their rationale for what they require students to do. Transparent assignment design focuses on how and why students are learning course content in particular ways, and how this learning is relevant for all students. The goal is simple: to make learning processes explicit and equitably accessible for all students. In this workshop, we will consider a simple purpose-task-criteria framework that helps us engage with students before they undertake their work in our classes so that we come closer together in understanding the knowledge they will gain from completing the work and how they might use skills and knowledge in their lives during and beyond college, the tasks involved, and the expected criteria with which we will assess their work.   This workshop session is designed to be delivered in a face-to-face format; however, we understand that you might need to attend remotely for a variety of reasons. When course enrollments soar beyond 100, 200, even 300 students, it’s easy to assume that we should change our teaching to accommodate so many students. Unfortunately, this assumption often manifests into the so-called “Death by PowerPoint” model.  So….is it possible to teach 300 students the same way that we teach 30 students?  Practically speaking, large enrollments do present some logistical challenges, but in terms of actual instruction, the answer is YES!  Join Dr. Ken Griffith, Director of the STEP Faculty & Student Partnerships to learn ways to manage logistical challenges yet make connections with students in large lecture courses to improve learning.  Joining us, will be a panel of undergraduate Learning Assistants, who will offer a perspective on so-called “Active Learning” and explain how they both benefit and contribute to a student-centered learning model. One critical element of an effective mentoring relationship is a shared understanding of what each person expects from that relationship. Problems between mentors and mentees often arise from misunderstandings about expectations. Expectations change over time, so frequent reflection & clear communication are necessary to maintain a collaborative relationship.

Your research needs funding. Federal grants are becoming scarcer and more competitive every year. Meanwhile, industry holds billions in R&D budgets—money that could potentially fund your research while creating real-world impact—but industry partners speak a language your academic training never taught you. In this workshop, Dr. Dave Giltner shares the frameworks he has learned over 25 years in industry—to help you secure industry partnerships, increase funding, and grow your lab. What you'll walk away with: 1. Identifying which companies would actually value your research 2. The exact approach to navigate complex IP negotiations without compromising academic integrity 3. How to articulate your lab's value in ROI terms industry leaders instantly understand—so they actually listen to what you have to offer 4. A customized industry collab plan tailored to your specific research strengths Dr. Giltner bridges the academic-industry divide from both sides. Having spent 25years developing cutting-edge technologies into commercial products, he understands exactly what companies seek in research partnerships—and what makes them invest. Through his workshops, he's taught thousands of researchers to translate their scientific value into industry & business terms. Dr. Giltner holds 7patents and is a published author of 3 books on academia-industry collaboration.

You spent years mastering your research field. But you were never told how to use it in industry. "If you want to work in industry, I can’t help you," they say—leaving you stranded and confused with how to get a job outside academia. In this workshop, Dr. Dave Giltner will share the framework he has developed over 25 years in industry—the same system that he's taught thousands of PhDs to design careers that leverage their unique strengths—while standing out to industry hiring managers! What you'll walk away with: 1. A 5-step process for designing a career path aligned with your specific strengths (not generic “job search” advice) 2. The method to identify which of your transferable skills have the highest value in industry 3. Why the online application lottery fails 90%+ of the time for PhDs (and what actually works instead) After 25 years in industry, David brings both sides of the hiring table to each session. As a hiring manager, he's interviewed hundreds of PhDs for industry positions, seeing firsthand what separates successful candidates from the rest. He's taught thousands of scientists about successful transitions, drawing from real hiring decisions. As a published author of 3 books and holder of 7 patents,David delivers industry hiring tips others never taught you.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Ann Austin (Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University) Teaching evaluation can be a pathway to more effective teaching and learning, better student learning outcomes, fairer recognition of faculty work, deeper conversations among colleagues about professional values and commitments, and stronger institutional cultures that foster teaching and learning excellence. However, typical approaches to teaching evaluation often fall far short of achieving these outcomes. Acknowledging critiques of usual strategies for teaching evaluation, this workshop will focus on important principles to guide more effective approaches to teaching evaluation. The workshop will also explain new and effective approaches based on these principles—and tested and implemented in more than 70 departments through a funded project called TEval. The workshop will provide opportunity for participants to discuss how to apply the ideas and strategies in their own departments to create more comprehensive, holistic, and valid teaching evaluation.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Ann Austin (Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University) Advancing transformative change toward an important institutional goal—such as improving teaching and learning through new approaches to teaching evaluation—requires a strategic and systemic approach. This workshop is designed especially to guide institutional leaders—including deans, department chairs, and leaders of units focused on teaching excellence and student success—to consider their roles in encouraging and supporting significant institutional change. We will discuss important levers and processes for fostering change in higher education, and why taking a systemic perspective is essential. The workshop will focus on changing teaching evaluation as an example of a major change goal; however, the change strategies discussed can be used to nurture many kinds of institutional change goals. This interactive workshop will include opportunities for small group discussion organized to enable leaders in similar leadership roles (e.g., senior-level leaders; department chairs; and other unit leaders) to discuss practical application of the ideas shared in their specific contexts.

Facilitator: Dr. Lisa Garner Santa The rhythms of academic life are relentless. Over time, we begin to move through the motions—responding to requests, meeting expectations, saying yes before we even pause to ask why. In this session, we’ll explore the six life-alienating motivators named in Nonviolent Communication: reward, punishment, guilt, shame, duty, and approval. What happens when these motivators go unchecked? And what becomes possible when we bring awareness and choice into the picture? Using Rosenberg’s framework, we’ll identify internalized pressures that may be shaping our academic decisions—and begin to shift from obligation to alignment.  “The most dangerous of all behaviors may consist of doing things 'because we're supposed to.’” – Marshall Rosenberg  IFE Path I and II
