In this session, we will delve into several philosophies of education to better understand how these frameworks for our teaching inform the pedagogical choices we make regarding not only what we teach and how we teach, but also how we view and interact with our students. There will be ample time for reflection and discussion regarding our purpose as higher education practitioners: What can we gain from interrogating the philosophies of education that shape our pedagogical identities and practices? In this session, we will practice ethical perspective-taking to analyze case studies that illustrate common ethical challenges in higher education. To do this, we will review concepts from previous sessions and readings, and we will also consider how operating from an ethics of care may shift our understanding and ability to respond to these scenarios. Finally, we will discuss if and how these case scenarios relate to ethical challenges we have experienced or observed in our teaching and learning contexts. Lunch will be provided. Envisioning Our Response to Ethical Challenges – (March 26, 2025 12:00 PM – 01:20 PM)

In this session, we will work with a series of questions to identify the specific nature of the ethical challenge we will choose to focus on in our ETL project, and we will use eight questions to articulate the ethical dimensions at stake in that challenge. By the end of this session, participants will have produced a preliminary title and description for their 15-minute presentation at the Ethics in Teaching & Learning Symposium on May 7th.
