These long-format events provide a retreat-style opportunity for faculty to engage with a topic on a deeper level. We ask those who register to commit by the date outlined in the event description so that the facilitators can best prepare activities and materials, and to give us an accurate number for the meals provided. Our goal is to offer one face-to-face opportunity each semester.

The purpose of this immersive learning experience is to support participants in deepening their understanding of nonviolent communication and its use in academic and professional settings. During the retreat, participants will practice using the OFNR process to make strengths-based requests using positive action language. By the end of the day, participants will feel empowered to maintain connection during difficult conversations. Karen Starz is a passionate advocate for connection, growth, and transformation. As a consultant, coach, speaker, facilitator, and CNVC Certified Trainer, she brings the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide. Her mission is to empower people to connect with their feelings, meet their needs, and embrace a deeper sense of compassion and collaboration. Deeply committed to social justice, Karen focuses much of her work on empowering Indigenous and underserved communities, drawing inspiration from her mother’s heritage. These communities, with their traditions of circle processes and deep dialogue, shape her unique approach to NVC. By honoring these roots, Karen works to heal pain and trauma while uplifting the wisdom of coexistence with people and nature. Karen’s spiritual journey is intricately tied to her work. For her, Nonviolent Communication is a form of practical spirituality, offering a concrete process for resolving conflicts and fostering unity. She is passionate about helping spiritual communities integrate NVC into their practices to bridge divisions and strengthen their shared faith. Karen collaborates with businesses and organizations to build sustainable, collaborative cultures that thrive through connection and shared purpose.
