Discernment, Trust, Hope: How Human Values Shape Teaching & Learning in the Age of AI

The TLPDC will hold the next AI mini conference on Friday, August 28, 2026. This event is fully virtual and designed for all instructors at any level of experience with generative AI.

This year, our conference will feature Carter Moulton, academic developer and creator of Analog Inspiration.

Carter Moulton, PhD is an academic developer, speaker, facilitator, media researcher, bedroom composer, backpacker, and novice graphic designer. He is the creator of Analog Inspiration, an educational card deck project featured on Inside Higher Ed, Teaching in Higher Ed, AI4K12, OneHE, and more. He currently works as a faculty developer at Colorado School of Mines, where he leads institutional initiatives related to AI, teaching, and learning. Carter’s pedagogical work has ranged from co-developing teacher training programs for primary and secondary teachers as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand, to founding a peer observation program for graduate students at Northwestern University, to designing and delivering training for faculty in India.

His teaching and learning publications include Teaching and Learning Inquiry, the American Society of Engineering Education, and the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies Teaching Dossier. His media research on contemporary digital culture and media experiences has appeared in the International Journal of Cultural Studies, Popular Communication, and Communication, Culture and Critique, among other places.

As part of the main session, our keynote speaker will use his Analog Inspiration cards to foster small group discussions. Each participant will also receive their own digital starter pack deck- a free PDF that includes 4 cards and a guide for how to get started. With the widespread impact of generative AI (genAI) tools, educators across disciplines face an urgent pressure to redesign their course policies, learning outcomes, in-class activities, and assessments. For many of us, it all feels like too much. This interactive keynote reframes our response to AI by revisiting what, why, and how we teach, and how we build environments of curiosity and care with and for our students. Drawing on Analog Inspiration, a card deck project featuring over 80 human values ranging from "accessibility" to "wonder," we'll explore what it means to develop a human-centered AI pedagogy practice—one that prioritizes human values, concerns, and skills. Through this lens, the session will outline practical strategies for cultivating trust with students, making student thinking visible, fostering intrinsic motivation, and strengthening the human relationships that make learning meaningful. Participants will have a chance to engage with the Analog Inspiration cards during the session, and will leave with concrete strategies they can implement in their own classrooms.
